The term ‘Content Management Solutions’ are often banded around in the website design community but what does it actually mean and what are the benefits of a CMS (content management solutions)? In relation to websites, be they websites for businesses, non-profit organisations, bloggers or government agencies, it is a necessity to have the capability to quickly manage content of that website including:

  1. Editing existing content. Over time content on a website or blog can become outdated or may need to be amended or added to. In the early days of web design content creation was quite an onerous task due to the html code and structure and design of websites. With the advent of CMS based web designs, the ability to change the content currently displayed on a website is made very simple as we demonstrate below.
  2. Adding new website content. With a well designed CMS website it becomes very easy to add new content, stories, sales releases, new product information, new pricing structures, new images or anything that is required for that website. The addition of content on most modern websites can be via addition of a new page to that website or a new post if the website has been designed to have a blog on it.
  3. Modifying the ‘look’ of the website. A CMS system can also make changing the look and feel of a website relatively simple. New images, banners, video’s and social network links and stories can be added in in a straightforward manner. Many websites use social media integration (like facebook, twitter and instagram, for example) to broaden the ‘reach’ of the business or organisation. Publishing new media related to social media linked content becomes possible by use of CMS technology in web design.

Example Of Adding Content Via a WordPress Content Management System

At DRC Systems, we base most of our new website designs for inner west clients, on the WordPress content management system. WordPress websites now make up close to 20 percent of all web designs in the world. This is due to wordpress’s versatility, constantly updated back end technology and coding, ease of use, mobile (tablet and smart phone) compatibility and overall functionality.

As an example of how easy to add content is on a wordpress based website (such as this one!), here are the steps a wordpress website owner needs to follow to create a new page and add in content and then publish that content onto the internet:

  1. Log into website
  2. Access website user dashboard
  3. Select ‘New Page’
  4. Create new page title, add content (via the simple text editor – very much like creating a document in Microsoft Word)
  5. Click on ‘Publish’ button

That is it – the process of adding a new page or post to a WordPress website is really very straightforward. This is an example of a content management system that makes content creation and editing for the owner of that website who can be totally non technical and accessible to everyone.
